Metacognition
Another assignment I did was the illustration of a novel cover for the memoir, “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac. It took be several hours to think it over because I had to decide what I wanted to do. I decided to give a short paragraph of why the readers should buy it mainly about the history and what went on in the story as hobos. In the novel, the plot is mainly traveling as hobos all around the United States. As the book cover, I chose to portray a main street of the road. The road symbolizes traveling. The people buying it could also think relate to cars since it’s a street. Usually when people think of cars, they also think of distances or miles to travel which could also relate to a plane and train. All these are types of vehicles of travel which I want to symbolize for my book cover. The spine also portrays a road because I wanted to stress the street on the book attracting people who like to think aesthetically. The summary I wrote on the back of my book is mainly about the plot. To interest the buyers and give them an understanding of the book whether or not they’re interest. I also gave the back of where or who it was reviewed from. The company or the person itself reviewing it could attract the readers more attention whether they know or not.

A memoir CD for On The Road by Jack Kerouac. The songs I chose are in no particular order. Four songs are basically dedicated to Dean. The other six songs are related to Sal. The songs in general are about life over time. A few songs are also dedicated to traveling and dedicated for significant others. Most of the songs are lyrical which fits the memoir. Each song is relatively related to the song. The tone are mostly upbeat emotion where it motivates to travel and talk about the past. The past of what it’s like being “on the road.” I feel that the songs I chose were significant and fit to my memoir well. These songs are dedicated to Dean and Sal mainly together. They basically travel all around throughout all of the United States as hobos.
In “Maybe this is Love” by Varsity, is dedicated to Dean. This song talks about how “there's something between us. I just can't get enough of you baby. Wait a minute, I'm saying maybe this is love.” This is part of the lyrics which reminds me of Dean because he goes around meeting different women as he travels. This song is relatively about Dean because of his journey. Dean travels all around thinking “maybe this is love” towards every woman he meets.”
In “Sunny Day” by Akon, is dedicated to both Dean and Sal. In the first verse, Akon says, “cause I was lost and couldn't find a way... and now I look forward to every day.” Dean and Sal in the novel separates from each other for a short while. They were doing their own tasks. Even though they both were traveling, they eventually met up again. When they decided to travel again together as hobos, they definitely looked “forward to every day.” They traveled until there was no tomorrow ending in Mexico City.
In “Deliverance” by Bubba Sparxx, is dedicated to the resolution. In the first verse, it says, “I’ve been traveling for some time, for some time, with my fishing pole and my bottle of shine, bottle of shine.” This song is also for Dean and Sal because after their long journey of being hobos, I’m positive of predicting that they would eventually end up traveling some more even though they ended in Mexico City. The song talks about the past of traveling, which relates to Dean’s and Sal’s adventure throughout the United States.
In “Find a Way” by Caleb, mainly talks about “travel in a car or fly up in a planetake you boating to the ocean riding on the waves because the miles is separate us is never gonna create us” which relates to Dean and his girlfriend. This song is for Dean because when he is traveling, he separates further and further away from his girlfriend with Sal. Even though they’re traveling, Dean still has his girlfriend in mind wherever they go.
In “Miss Her” by Encore, is also dedicated to Dean. This song says, “and I miss her” in the chorus which relates to Dean. Dean is “on the road” with Sal and he talks about how he misses his girlfriend.
In “Lowridin” by Far East Movement, is dedicated for Dean again. The song says, “Me and my girl, Bumpin’ the Oldies with the homies we on top of the world.” This is relatively to Dean because the song talks about how they’re riding in a car with a girl which is like Dean. The girls who Dean usually picks up are the ones who are close with dean with more than just a friend. This song talks about being with a girl saying, “I will always love you” which is meant for his girlfriend.
In “Guarantee” by Flo Rida featuring Akon, in the chorus, Akon says, “she gotta be down, gotta love, thats me, She gotta be down, for sure guarantee.” This is relatively related to Dean because since he is traveling with Sal, Dean has his girlfriend which is his guarantee, but he seems as if he doesn’t appreciate what he has. Dean seems as if he’s a lost child through out the novel, but he travels with Sal in the right direction.
In “Call and Return” by Hellogoodbye, the first verse is “you promised me starry night skies, they just remind me of your shining bright eyes, I’m missing a voice at night time, sepa-separation seem seems a sad crime” in the song. This quote is for Dean and Sal because they travel and are separated from friends and family.
In “On and On” by Jay Sean, the first verse is “Thinking bout all of those days I left behind, nowadays it seems I'm watching life just pass me by, the world is spinning beneath my feet at an unforgiving pace, and I, I just find myself falling victim to the chase.” This fits as an resolution.
In “Time After Time” by Quietdrive, is also part of the resolution. This song basically talks about life and how life is flying by as Dean and Sal travels. Dean and Sal are the best of buddies next to Carlo Maxx, but this song definitely fits between the two because it talks about friendship. The chorus says, “if you’re lost, you can look and you will find me, time after time, if you fall, I will catch you, I’ll be waiting, time after time.” This chorus fits this memoir because it relates to how Dean and Sal has each others back through out traveling. They go through most of the situations together.
These ten songs I picked for my memoir CD is repetitive. Even though its repetitive, all the songs fit to “On The Road” mainly on Dean and Sal. They travel together, have a past together, and will cherish the moments for life. Even though they end in Mexico City, they will most likely be travel buddies for life.

Progressing Hardships
I entered high school setting a goal to achieve high honor roll. Becoming in this new environment filled with studious students around me motivated me to exceed in classes, I strived to learn and focus on what was needed to succeed and graduate from high school at the top of my class. Outside of school, however my father hosted parties which involved drinking and smoking along with his other friends. As a young man, I knew that I didn’t want to become my father. My father was an alcoholic which affected my family emotionally. Our extended family often gathered so we could help him but most of the time it was just depressing, frustrating, and full of anger. Our conversation usually ended in arguments.
One night during my sophomore year, I was up late on my computer when I heard a devastating fall in the living room. I went downstairs to find my father on the floor. I was frightened and I woke up my mother, and I called for an ambulance. My father was then taken to the hospital which affected my family even greater. I visit the hospital a week later and doctors told me that my father had a stroke. It was a rehabilitation hospital which was a dramatic surround. Most of my whole family had already visit my father and heard of the news. My family ended up arguing mostly every week and over time, I started to understand more of my family and morals. This experience I will never forget because of my father being an alcoholic.
At this point, I’ve become emotionally stressed due to family purposes. I had fewer privileges, but still strived to do well in school. Time was an issue for me because I was not able to stay after because of my father. After school here and there I visit my dad at the rehabilitation hospital with my aunt. My father is the core of the family. All my cousins are close with him and so are my aunts and uncles. My father was there for everyone knowing what to do in times in need or help. This incident became dramatic because my family became in distress. During visits and going home late at night I strived to finish all my homework. Finding time was difficult for me in order to receive help from teachers when I need it. After a month or so I became more organized in managing my time and becoming less stressed.
I have become more independent and indirectly influenced through my high school years. Even though my family struggled over time, I learned how to solve certain problems and felt helpless with others. I built character throughout high school. I learned to become more discipline and have respect for others wherever I go. I also became wise knowing what to do when it comes to situations. My family told me that family always came first before school, but now that I have time, I plan to strive in college and achieve a master’s degree.
